The Marriage License

marriage-license-2A legal marriage within North Carolina, whether civil or religious, can only occur if a marriage license has been issued. In fact, you can’t get married without it.

The license is secured from a county Register of Deeds office and is valid throughout the state for 60 days after it is issued. Persons 21 years old or older may validate their personal identification with a Driver’s License. Persons between the ages of 18 and 21 years may marry without the consent of a parent or guardian, but will need a Birth Certificate. There is no longer a blood test requirement or waiting period.

    • Both you and your fiancé should be present at the time of making application for a marriage license.
    • Picture ID is required of each, i.e. Drivers License and proof of Social Security.
    • Each is required to present their Social Security card or documentary proof of their Social Security number, i.e. W-2 form, payroll stub, or a statement from the Social Security Office stating their Social Security number.
    • The legal age for marriage is 18 years. However, REVonCall will not marry any individual under the age of 21 without premarital counseling and parental permission.
    • The marriage license is valid for sixty (60) days from the date of issuance.
    • The office hours for most County Register of Deeds offices are 8:00–5:00 p.m. To insure that issuance is completed by the 5:00 p.m. closing time, you should be in the office no later than 4:00 p.m.
    • The marriage license fee is $60.00.
    • You should designate two witnesses to sign the license in my presence as required by law.

Following the ceremony, REVonCall will complete the license and return it to the Register of Deeds Office in the county where it was issued. The license then becomes an official record.

Name Change

If the bride wishes to change her name, you will need a certified copy of your marriage license from the Register of Deeds office in the county where the license was issued. REVonCall is allowed 10 days to return the license, so she should wait a couple of weeks before making her request.
